Gaur, << gowr, >> is a wild ox of India, Myanmar, and the Malay Peninsula. Adult bull (male) gaurs stand 5 to 6 feet (1.5 to 1.8 meters) tall at the shoulder and weigh over 2,000 pounds (910 kilograms). Adult cows (females) are somewhat smaller. Gaurs have short, dark brown hair. They also have curved horns, a large hump on the back, and a loose fold of skin under the throat. Gaurs live in tropical forests, usually in rocky hill country. These shy animals are usually found in small herds. The gaur faces possible extinction because people have hunted it and destroyed large areas of its forest habitat.
