Gemsbok

Gemsbok, << GEHMZ bok, >> is a type of long-horned antelope known as an oryx. The gemsbok is found in dry regions of southern Africa. It is related to other oryx species (kinds) found in eastern and northern Africa and the Middle East. The gemsbok stands about 4 feet (1.2 meters) high at the shoulder and weighs about 500 pounds (230 kilograms). The adults of both sexes have nearly straight, sharp horns that sweep backward up to 4 feet (1.2 meters).

The gemsbok has striking coloration, with a mostly gray body and a white belly and face. It has black markings on the face, sides, legs, and back. It lives in herds of up to 300 animals, feeding on scattered grasses. It occasionally eats wild melons and plant roots for their moisture.
