George V

George V (1865-1936) became king of the United Kingdom in 1910. He was the second son of Edward VII and became heir to the throne when his older brother, the Duke of Clarence, died in 1892. Meanwhile, he had been trained for the Navy and became a vice admiral in 1903. He married Princess Victoria Mary of Teck in 1893.

George was born in London on June 3, 1865. After he succeeded his father in 1910, he and his queen gained lasting popularity by their courage and devotion during World War I (1914-1918). George was also admired for his conscientious attention to his duties. George was fair-minded and devoted much time to strengthening the United Kingdom’s links with its vast empire. George was succeeded by his oldest son, Edward VIII. George died on Jan. 20, 1936.
