Gettysburg

Gettysburg, << GEHT eez `buhrg` or GEHT ihz `buhrg` >> (pop. 7,106), is a community in southern Pennsylvania that is famous as the site of the Battle of Gettysburg, one of the most important battles of the American Civil War (1861-1865). Gettysburg’s economy is based on tourism. The Civil War battlefield, which lies just outside Gettysburg, is now maintained by the National Park Service as the Gettysburg National Military Park and the Gettysburg National Cemetery. Many historical monuments and museums stand in and near Gettysburg. Commercial orchards nearby produce large quantities of apples and peaches. Gettysburg is the home of Gettysburg College and a campus of the United Lutheran Seminary.

Gettysburg was founded about 1786 by James Gettys, a local tavern owner. The town is the seat of Adams County and has a council-manager form of government.
