Ghost town is the name given to the ruins of a town that has been abandoned. Numerous ghost towns exist in the Western United States, including Alaska, and in Canada. Many are the ruins of towns that sprang up after 1850 around mines or, later, oil fields. The residents abandoned the towns as the mines or fields were worked out. See also Idaho (Places to visit) .
