Gilman, Nicholas (1755-1814), was a New Hampshire signer of the Constitution of the United States. He also helped win ratification (approval) of the Constitution by New Hampshire.
Gilman was born in Exeter, New Hampshire, on Aug. 3, 1755. His family was influential in New Hampshire politics. Gilman was a delegate to the Congress of the Confederation from 1787 to 1789. He served four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, from 1789 to 1797. After a period of service in various New Hampshire state offices, he served as a United States senator from 1805 until his death on May 2, 1814. Gilman followed more than he led during his long political career and remained a figure of only minor influence.
