Girl Guides is an international organization for girls between the ages of 5 and 17. The Girl Guides movement began in England soon after Lord Baden-Powell introduced the Boy Scout movement there. In 1909, Baden-Powell officially recognized the Guides and published the pamphlet Scheme of Training for Girl Guides.
Lord Baden-Powell’s sister, Agnes Baden-Powell, served as first commissioner of the Girl Guides and helped organize the Girl Guides Association. By 1910, the movement had spread to Canada and many other parts of the Commonwealth of Nations and also to other countries. The organization is called Girl Scouts in the United States and its possessions. For a fuller discussion of Girl Guides, see the Girl Scouts article. See also Baden-Powell, Lord .
