Goudy was born on March 18, 1865, in Bloomington, Illinois. He became a full-time designer of letters and books in 1899. In 1903, he and his wife set up the Village Press, a printing company. A fire in 1908 forced the press to close for two years. After the fire, Goudy concentrated on the design, production, and selling of type. He taught lettering at the Art Students League in New York City from 1916 to 1924, and graphic arts at New York University from 1927 to 1929. From 1920 to1947, Goudy was art director for the Lanston Monotype Company. Goudy died on May 11, 1947, in Marlborough-on-Hudson, New York.
