Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America serves more than 1.5 million followers in the United States. The Archdiocese is under the jurisdiction of the ecumenical patriarch of Constantinople, the highest spiritual leader of the Eastern Orthodox Churches. The Archdiocese consists of the Archdiocesan District of New York and eight dioceses—Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, New Jersey, Pittsburgh, and San Francisco. The primate (leader) is the archbishop, who governs the Archdiocese with the Eparchial Synod of Bishops. The synod is headed by the archbishop and consists of the bishops in charge of each diocese. The Archdiocese includes about 540 parishes served by about 800 priests.
The denomination was incorporated in 1921 as the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America. The Archdiocese adopted its present name in 1996. The Archdiocese operates the Hellenic College/Holy Cross School of Theology in Brookline, Massachusetts, and Saint Basil Academy in Garrison, New York. Archdiocese headquarters are in New York City.
