Anubis, << uh NOO bihs, >> in Egyptian mythology, served as the god of mummification, the ancient Egyptian technique of embalming the dead. The jackal—and later the dog—served as his sacred animal. In Egyptian art, Anubis often appears as a crouching jackal or dog or as a man with a jackal’s head. His main center of worship was at Kynopolis, which means Dog City in Greek. In the myth of Osiris, Anubis invents embalming and helps restore Osiris to life after he is murdered by Seth.
