Grosz, George

Grosz, << grohs, >> George (1893-1959), a German painter, became famous in the 1920’s for his biting satires of the military and wealthy classes, and for drawings criticizing the moral collapse of society after World War I (1914-1918). For a time in the 1930’s, his paintings became less gloomy, but he usually painted works on social evil and war. In 1933, disturbed by the trend toward fascism, Grosz moved from Germany to New York City. He became a United States citizen in 1938. Grosz was born in Berlin on July 26, 1893. He died on July 6, 1959.
