Heidelberg, << HYD uhl burg, >> University of, is the oldest university in Germany. It was established in Heidelberg in 1386. Its library was founded in the 1500’s, and includes a collection of old German manuscripts. Many of the university’s students come from countries other than Germany. The University of Heidelberg, which was modeled after the University of Paris, originally had four departments–arts, law, medicine, and theology. During the 1500’s, it became the center of Protestant learning. The University of Heidelberg was reorganized in 1803 and became a center for the study of German folklore and medieval literature. It is supported by the German state of Baden-Wurttemberg.
