Arboretum, << `ahr` buh REE tuhm, >> is an outdoor laboratory where trees, shrubs, and other woody plants are grown under natural conditions. The plants are often arranged and labeled according to the family and the relationship to other plants of the same species. Most arboretums are open to the public and have been the means of developing a widespread appreciation of this kind of landscaped botanical garden. Research at arboretums has led to improved methods of growing hardier and more beautiful trees and shrubs. Most arboretums also have trial sections where experiments are made in raising new and rare plants. Arboretums are dedicated mainly to trees, but sometimes special sections are devoted to such plants as vines and shrubs.
