Ipswich (pop. 139,642) is a town and local government district in Suffolk, England. It is an important industrial and commercial center, lying at the mouth of the River Orwell. Ipswich manufacturers produce artificial fertilizers, engineering products, and clothing. Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, the chief adviser to King Henry VIII, was born in the town in the 1470’s, and the painter Thomas Gainsborough lived there in the 1700’s. See also Suffolk.
