Jaffa, << JAF uh >>, in Israel, is one of the world’s oldest cities. Ancient Egyptian records confirm its existence. It has been an important seaport since Biblical times, when it was called Joppa. Most of the city’s Arab population fled during the Arab-Israeli war of 1948. The city merged with Tel Aviv in 1950.
