Jimmu, according to legend, was the first emperor of Japan. He is often called Jimmu Tenno (Emperor Jimmu). His story is told in Japan’s earliest texts of history and myth, the Kojiki (Record of Ancient Matters) and the Nihongi (Chronicles of Japan). Both texts were written in the A.D. 600’s and 700’s. According to legend, Jimmu led a force of men from southwestern Japan to the area around present-day Nara and Osaka. There, he became emperor in 660 B.C. This coronation date is mythical. However, some scholars believe Jimmu was a real figure, and the story of his migration may reflect a real event. Modern Japanese emperors claim to be descended from Jimmu in an unbroken line.
