Johnson, Pauline

Johnson, Pauline (1861-1913), was a Canadian writer known for poetry about Indigenous (Native American) life. She was born on March 10, 1861, on a reservation near Brantford, Ontario. Her father was a Mohawk chief, and her mother was English. Johnson said of her writing: “I am Indian, and my aim, my joy, and my pride is to sing the glories of my own people.” Her full name was Emily Pauline Johnson, and she is sometimes known as E. Pauline Johnson.

Johnson’s poetry was first published in 1895. Her poems were collected in Flint and Feather (1912). She also wrote Legends of Vancouver (1911), a series of short stories about Canada’s Squamish people. She died on March 7, 1913.
