Labor Statistics, Bureau of (BLS), is an agency of the United States Department of Labor. It collects and interprets information about the labor force and the performance of the economy.
The bureau conducts research on employment and unemployment; productivity and technological developments; wages, salaries, and benefits; industrial relations; work injuries, illnesses, and fatalities; prices and living conditions; and foreign labor and trade. This information is used by labor, industry, other government agencies, and the public. The bureau publishes a variety of reviews, reports, and periodicals.
The agency was established in 1884 as the Federal Bureau of Labor. It received its present name in 1913. The bureau’s website at https://www.bls.gov provides additional information.
