Laborers’ International Union of North America

Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) is a labor organization with local unions in the United States and Canada. It consists primarily of building and construction workers who perform helpers’ tasks for skilled workers. For example, membership is open to assistants for carpenters, plasterers, and masons; to workers who mix or handle construction materials; and to general laborers.

The union was organized in 1903 as the Hod Carriers’ Union. LIUNA left the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) in 2006 and joined a new labor coalition, Change to Win. Disagreements about the use of union resources caused the split. In 2010, however, the union left Change to Win and rejoined the AFL-CIO. LIUNA headquarters are in Washington, D.C.
