Lawson, Nigel

Lawson, Nigel (1932-…), a Conservative Party politician, was the United Kingdom’s chancellor of the exchequer (chief financial officer) from 1983 to 1989. He had been financial secretary to the Treasury from 1979 to 1981 and was secretary of state for energy from 1981 to 1983.

Lawson was born on March 11, 1932, in Newnham, Northamptonshire. He was educated at Westminster School and Oxford University. After service in the Royal Navy, he became a financial journalist and broadcaster. Lawson edited The Spectator magazine from 1966 to 1970. In 1963 and 1964, he served as special assistant to Prime Minister Sir Alec Douglas-Home. Lawson became a member of Parliament for Blaby, Leicestershire, in 1974. He was opposition spokesman on economic affairs from 1977 to 1979. In 1992, he was made a life peer.
