Le Nôtre, André << luh NAW truh, ahn DRAY >> (1613-1700), a French landscape designer, created many of the famous gardens of his day. He became known for the masterpieces he designed for King Louis XIV of France and the royal family. Le Nôtre designed his most famous gardens for the royal palace at Versailles. In France, he also designed gardens for the Château Vaux-le-Vicomte, and for parks in St.-Cloud, Fontainebleau, and Chantilly. In England, he created the gardens at Greenwich and influenced many other garden designs. Le Nôtre often used broad, treelined avenues to make his gardens appear expansive. He also arranged flower beds and shrubs in geometric patterns.
Le Nôtre was born on March 12, 1613, in Paris. He died on Sept. 15, 1700.
