Lockwood, Douglas (1918-1980), an Australian author, wrote I, the Aboriginal (1962). This biography tells the story of Waipuldanya, an Aboriginal man of the Alawa people in the Roper River district. Waipuldanya was an employee of the Commonwealth Health Department in the Northern Territory. He was known in Darwin as Philip Roberts. An outstanding biography, I, the Aboriginal is important for its sympathetic insight into the outlook and customs of the Aboriginal peoples of Australia and the problems they encountered in reconciling two ways of life. Lockwood’s other books include Crocodiles and Other People (1958), We, the Aborigines (1963), Up the Track (1964), The Lizard Eaters (1964), Australia’s Pearl Harbor (1966), The Front Door (1968), and Northern Territory Sketchbook (1968).
Douglas Wright Lockwood was born on July 9, 1918, in Natimuk, Victoria. He spent much of his adult life as a correspondent in the Northern Territory for the Melbourne Herald. He died on Dec. 21, 1980.
