The caves were formed as underground water slowly dissolved the limestone. The caves have many large rooms. Some are more than 140 feet (43 meters) high. Some of the colorful hanging rocks, called stalactites, are over 50 feet (15 meters) long. The caverns were discovered by Andrew J. Campbell and his companions in August 1878.
