Abraham, William

Abraham, William (1842-1922), was a Welsh politician and trade (labor) union leader. He was born on June 14, 1842, in Cwmavon, a village 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of Cardiff, Wales, and he started work as a miner at the age of 9. He became an agent for the miners in 1871 and worked for many years to develop the miners’ unions. He was elected to Parliament in 1885 as a radical in the Liberal Party. After the miners’ national organization became affiliated with the Labour Party in 1909, Abraham joined the Labour Party. He remained a member of Parliament until 1920. Abraham was famous as an orator and took part in Welsh eisteddfods (festivals of music and arts). He became well known in Wales by his eisteddfodic name, Mabon. He died on May 14, 1922.
