Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is an honorary nonprofit organization. It was founded in 1927. Its members include leaders in every phase of filmmaking. Its purposes are to advance the arts and sciences of motion pictures; to foster cooperation in the industry for cultural, educational, and technological progress; and to recognize outstanding film achievements through the presentation of annual Academy Awards , also called Oscars. The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, California, which opened in 2021, is devoted to the arts, sciences, and artists of filmmaking.
