Adams, Scott

Adams, Scott (1957-…), is an American cartoonist. He created the comic strip “Dilbert,” about an engineer struggling with the often ridiculous policies of corporate management. Other characters in the comic strip include Dilbert’s fellow employees Alice and Wally; Catbert, a cat who is the human-resources director; and Dogbert and Ratbert, a dog and a rat who serve as consultants. Adams has based many of his cartoons on stories from his readers about their own work experiences.

Adams was born on June 8, 1957, in Windham, New York. He earned a graduate degree in business administration and held numerous jobs in technology and finance. “Dilbert” was first syndicated—that is, distributed to a large number of newspapers—in 1989. Several collections of “Dilbert” cartoons became best-selling books. Adams has also written other books, including The Dilbert Principle (1996) and Dogbert’s Top Secret Management Handbook (1996).

Newspapers dropped “Dilbert” in 2023, after Adams made some public comments that were widely perceived as racist.
