Adams, Sherman

Adams, Sherman (1899-1986), served as chief of staff to United States President Dwight D. Eisenhower from 1953 to 1958. He resigned after Democratic and Republican leaders criticized him for taking gifts from a Boston industrialist whose business affairs were under government investigation. Adams served as a Republican representative in Congress from 1945 to 1947, and as governor of New Hampshire from 1949 to 1953. He was born on Jan. 8, 1899, in East Dover, Vermont. He died on Oct. 27, 1986.
