Addax, << AD aks, >> is an antelope that lives in the deserts of northern Africa. The addax resembles its close relative, the oryx (see Antelope (Kinds of antelope) ). 
The addax is well suited for desert life. It can withstand hot temperatures, go without water for long periods, and eat coarse desert plants. The addax stands about 31/2 feet (107 centimeters) high at the shoulder. Its body and neck are grayish-brown in winter and sandy to almost white in summer. There is a patch of chestnut-colored hair on the forehead. The spirally twisting horns grow about 4 feet (1.2 meters) long. The addax usually runs in herds of from 5 to 30 animals. It is in great danger of extinction due mostly to overhunting.
