Agassi, << AG uh see, >> Andre (1970-…), ranks among the greatest players in the history of American men’s tennis. Agassi became known for his powerful forehand and backhand strokes as well as for his ability to return an opponent’s serve. He was one of the most popular and recognizable players in men’s tennis, and earned many commercial endorsements along with worldwide fame. Agassi retired as an active player in 2006 with 60 career tournament victories.
Agassi became the fifth man to win all four grand slam tennis tournaments during his career. He won Wimbledon in England in 1992; the United States Open in 1994 and 1999; the Australian Open in 1995, 2000, 2001, and 2003; and the French Open in 1999. Agassi also won the gold medal as men’s singles champion at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta. In 2001, he married the German tennis star Steffi Graf. Andre Kirk Agassi was born on April 29, 1970, in Las Vegas. Agassi wrote Open: An Autobiography (2009).
