Alabama, University of, is a state-supported educational system. Its official name is the University of Alabama System. It consists of three separate universities that report to the same board of trustees. The original and flagship campus is the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The system also includes the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). The University of Alabama was founded in 1831. UAB and UAH were established as extensions of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and began operating independently in 1969. The system was established in 1975. The university’s athletic teams from the Tuscaloosa campus are called the Crimson Tide.
