Alcazar, << AL kuh zahr, >> is the name usually given to Spanish palaces built by the Moors, a Muslim people from North Africa. Some alcazars were walled fortresses used for defense. An alcazar in Toledo, Spain, was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). The Alhambra is perhaps the best-known alcazar (see Alhambra ).
