Anderson, Elizabeth Garrett

Anderson, Elizabeth Garrett (1836-1917), was the first woman doctor in England. After strong opposition, she became licensed to practice medicine in 1865. In 1870, she gained a medical degree from Sorbonne College (now the University of Paris). For 19 years, she was the only female member of the British Medical Association. She was dean of the London School of Medicine for Women for 20 years. Anderson was born on June 9, 1836, in London, where she founded a hospital for women, now named the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital. She died on Dec. 17, 1917.
