Andretti, Mario

Andretti, << an DREHT tee, >> Mario (1940-…), became a top race car driver. Andretti won the Grand Prix world driving championship in 1978. He won the Daytona 500 race for stock cars in 1967 and the Indianapolis 500 race in 1969. Andretti won the United States Auto Club national driving championship in 1965 and 1966. In 1966, he finished first in eight of the races that made up the U.S. championship circuit. He won the national championship in 1969 and in 1984. Andretti is the only driver who has won the Grand Prix world driving championship, the Daytona 500 race, and the Indianapolis 500 race. He retired from racing in 1994.

Andretti was born on Feb. 28, 1940, near Trieste, a city on the Adriatic Sea. He spent seven years in a displaced persons camp after World War II and moved to the United States in 1955. Michael Andretti, his son, was also a leading race car driver.
