Joint Base Andrews-Naval Air Facility Washington, in Maryland, houses several passenger aircraft used to transport the president of the United States and other government and military leaders. When the president is aboard an Air Force plane, that plane is known as Air Force One. Joint Base Andrews covers about 4,300 acres (1,750 hectares) southeast of Washington, D.C. The base was established in 1943 as Camp Springs Army Air Field. In 1945, it was renamed for Lieutenant General Frank M. Andrews, who had died in an aircraft accident in 1943.
