Androcles

Androcles, << AN druh kleez >>, also called Androclus, was an enslaved man in ancient Rome who ran away from his enslaver and hid in a cave. He took a thorn from the paw of a suffering lion. Later, Androcles faced the same lion in the Roman arena. The lion recognized him and refused to harm him. George Bernard Shaw’s play Androcles and the Lion (1912) is based on this story.
