Anhydrous ammonia

Anhydrous ammonia, << an HY druhs uh MOHN yuh, >> is the liquid form of pure ammonia gas. Because of its high nitrogen content–about 82 percent–farmers use anhydrous ammonia as a fertilizer. It may be used alone or in a commercial mixture containing compounds of phosphorus and potassium. It may be combined with water to form a solution for making a mixed fertilizer. Anhydrous ammonia is also used as a refrigerant in cold-storage and ice-manufacturing plants. It is made by compressing dry ammonia gas. See also Ammonia ; Ice ; Refrigeration .
