Antigua, << ahn TEE gwuh >> (pop. 46,148), formerly Antigua Guatemala, was the capital of Guatemala in colonial days. The city was founded in 1543. It is west of the present capital, Guatemala City. In 1773, an earthquake destroyed Antigua. The capital was moved to its present site in 1776. Antigua’s colonial ruins attract many tourists.
