Appomattox << `ap` uh MAT uhks >> Court House was a little country settlement in central Virginia. It was the scene of Robert E. Lee’s surrender to Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865. Within the next two months, all remaining Confederate forces also surrendered, ending the American Civil War. It became a National Historical Park in 1954. The park is near the town of Appomattox, Virginia. Among points of interest are the McLean House, site of the agreement on the terms of surrender, a visitor center, and a Confederate cemetery.
