Ardizzone, << `ahr` diht ZOH nee, >> Edward (1900-1979), was a British author and illustrator of award-winning books for children. He wrote many adventure stories that include lively, often humorous drawings. Ardizzone also illustrated over 100 books by other authors.
Ardizzone’s most popular books tell about Little Tim, a young boy who lives in a seaside town. Little Tim and the Brave Sea Captain (1936) was the first book Ardizzone wrote and illustrated. Other works in the series include Tim to the Rescue (1949), Tim All Alone (1956), and Tim’s Last Voyage (1973).
Edward Jeffrey Irving Ardizzone was born on Oct. 16, 1900, in Haiphong, Indochina (now Vietnam), and moved to England with his family when he was 5. Many scenes in the Little Tim books take place on the southeastern coast of England where he grew up. Ardizzone wrote and illustrated The Young Ardizzone: An Autobiographical Fragment (1970). He also gained recognition as a fine painter. He died on Nov. 8, 1979.
