Arena

Arena was the area used for combat with beasts or between gladiators in an ancient Roman amphitheater. Rising rows of stone seats enclosed the space, which was usually oval. The name arena, which means sand in Latin, came from the practice of spreading sand on the floor to absorb blood. The floor of a Roman arena had passageways underneath for animals or for storage. Arenas today are used for bullfights, concerts, and other events.
