Århus << AWR hoos >>, also spelled Åarhus, is one of the largest cities in Denmark. The municipality of Århus has a population of 367,095. A municipality may include rural areas as well as the urban center. Only Copenhagen has more people. Århus lies on the east coast of the peninsula of Jutland. Århus is a busy seaport and a center of industry and commerce. Its major industries include the production of iron, machines, clothing, chemicals, and timber.

Århus developed from a settlement founded in the A.D. 800’s. The Cathedral of St. Clemens, built in the 1100’s, is a major landmark of Århus. Located in the center of the city, it has the highest steeple in Denmark. An open-air museum on the outskirts of Århus—called Den Gamle By, or The Old Town—displays Danish town houses dating from the 1500’s to the 1800’s. Other sites in Århus include a marble city hall and Aarhus University. The city also has schools of art, music, dentistry, and journalism.
