United States Army War College, in Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, is the senior educational institution of the United States Army. The students consist primarily of colonels and lieutenant colonels of the Army. Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and U.S. government agency officers, as well as senior members of the armed forces of other nations also may train at the college. Acceptance to the college is considered a significant career accomplishment.
The college’s curriculum focuses on national security issues, military strategy, and war operations. It emphasizes the interaction of the Army with other U.S. forces and with the forces of other nations.
The Army War College was founded in 1901 in Washington, D.C., by Secretary of War Elihu Root. Classes were suspended during World War I (1914-1918) and from 1940 to 1950.
