Arran is an island in North Ayrshire, in southwestern Scotland. It lies in the Firth of Clyde and is about 20 miles (32 kilometers) long and 10 miles (16 kilometers) wide. Arran’s coastal villages, rugged mountains, lakes, woodland glens, and outdoor activities make it a popular tourist destination. A peak called Goatfell rises 2,867 feet (874 meters) above the granite island and is the highest point in North Ayrshire.
The Isle of Arran has several prehistoric stone monuments and remains. Its main industries are tourism, forestry, and fishing. The island is of particular interest to geologists because of its great variety of rock types and formations. Ferries shuttle daily between Brodick, Arran’s main village, and the Scottish mainland.
