Atchison, David Rice

Atchison, David Rice (1807-1886), was a United States senator from Missouri. Some people claim he was president of the United States for one day—March 4, 1849. This was to be Zachary Taylor’s inauguration day. But it was postponed one day because it fell on Sunday. Technically, there was no president that day. Atchison, as president pro tempore of the Senate, was next in line for the office. He was elected president pro tempore of the Senate 16 times between 1846 and 1854. He was born on Aug. 11, 1807, in Frogtown, Kentucky. He died on Jan. 26, 1886.
