Auburn University is a state university with campuses in Auburn and Montgomery, Alabama. The campus in Auburn was chartered in 1856 as the East Alabama Male College of the Methodist Church. In 1872, it became a state-supported school and was renamed Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama. Women students were first admitted in 1892. The school became Alabama Polytechnic Institute in 1899 and was renamed Auburn University in 1960. In 1964, Auburn began admitting African American students. The Montgomery campus opened in 1969. The university’s athletic teams are called the Tigers.
