Banjarmasin

Banjarmasin, << `bahn` juhr MAH sihn, >> also spelled Bandjarmasin (pop. 657,663), is the capital of South Kalimantan province in Indonesia. The city lies on the Barito River in southeastern Borneo. Banjarmasin exports oil, timber, copra, and diamonds. It was founded by the Dutch in 1711. In 1942, during World War II, Japanese forces seized the city. The Allies recaptured it in 1945.
