Bartlett, John (1820-1905), an American publisher, became known chiefly for the book Familiar Quotations, which is still published under his name. A notebook he kept for the convenience of customers at his University Book Store in Cambridge, Massachusetts, developed into the first edition of the Quotations in 1855. He was born on June 14, 1820, in Plymouth, Massachusetts. He died on Dec. 3, 1905.
