Beaurepaire, Sir Frank

Beaurepaire, Sir Frank (1891-1956), was an Australian swimmer, industrialist, and philanthropist. He became a world champion swimmer, and set what were then world records for various distances. Beaurepaire represented Australia at the Olympic Games in 1908, 1920, and 1924. He won three silver medals and three bronze medals.

In 1922, Beaurepaire established a tire factory that grew into a huge business producing a variety of products from cables to tires. In 1928, Beaurepaire became a member of the Melbourne City Council. He served as lord mayor of Melbourne from 1940 to 1942 and as a member of the Victorian Legislative Council from 1942 to 1952. He was also a prominent philanthropist. His donations included the financing of a physical education center at the University of Melbourne.

Beaurepaire was born on May 13, 1891, in Melbourne. His full name was Francis Joseph Edmund Beaurepaire. King George VI knighted him in 1942. Sir Frank died in Melbourne on May 29, 1956.
