Bee fly is an insect that looks like a bee. Most bee flies have short, broad bodies covered with dense hair. They may be black, brown, or yellow. Unlike bees, bee flies have only one pair of flight wings. A pair of small modified wings called halteres << hal TIHR eez >> are used for balance. Bee flies often rest on or hover above flowers. Their food consists of nectar and pollen. Bee fly larvae (young) eat grasshopper eggs, or larvae and pupae of other insects.
