Bishop, John (1903-1964), was a noted Australian conductor and music educator. Bishop was Elder professor of music at Adelaide University and director of the Elder Conservatorium, in Adelaide, South Australia, positions he held from 1948 until his death on Dec. 14, 1964. Bishop also was a founder of the Adelaide Festival, and he served as its artistic director until his death. In addition, Bishop helped found the National Music Camp Association and directed its Australian Youth Orchestra.
Bishop was born in Aldinga, South Australia, on Oct. 26, 1903. He was educated at the Royal College of Music, in London.
